Design Event 09 Update

Design Event 09 Update

With Design Event 09 festival just weeks away, we're leaping ahead with progress.  The beautifully designed invitation packs went out last week to Design Event networks, telling all about what has been planned around the festival theme of Politics and Play.  I’ve also hosted briefing sessions for our team of over 50 volunteers – always encouraging to see some committed and interested people joining the team to deliver the festival.

It's Design Event's 5th birthday, and working here for the third year myself, I'm pleased to be managing some great projects and events.

One of my personal favourites has to be Simon Heijdens' TREE installation, which I've been managing, along with some great technical support from Nick Joyce and his team at ArtAV.  It's an interactive, digital installation, by the international designer - a projected, life-sized tree which moves along with real-time wind conditions, measured by sensors.  As well as linking with weather patterns, if you pass by the tree, a leaf will shed.  These projected leaves will fall and gather at a nearby site – High Friar Lane which runs alongside the Tyneside Cinema.  It looks set to have a great impact and brighten the streets of Newcastle, not to be missed…

TREE installation: 15 – 26 October, from Dusk until Late, Brunswick Place (between Waterstones and Monument Mall) + High Friar Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne.
