transmediale.11 - RESPONSE:ABILITY
transmediale is an international festival for contemporary art and digital culture founded in 1988, which takes place annually in Berlin. transmediale.11 ran from 1-6 February 2011, and Haus Projects were delighted to be invited to work on the festival for a second time, to deliver some events and manage guest services.
transmediale is the largest festival of its kind in the world, a celebration of culturally significant advanced artistic outlooks, using new technologies. The festival took place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures), and included exhibitions, performances, screenings, a conference, a programme of in-depth discussions and talks, workshops, a publication, and partner events.
Beckie spent 3 months out in Berlin, working closely with the team to deliver the festival. Looking after guest services for over 200 participants from 30 countries, as well as managing the festival's prestigious Opening Gala, and the Awards Ceremony.
The festival attracted a record number of well over 30,000 visitors this year. More details about the transmediale.11 programme can be found here.
This year's theme RESPONSE:ABILITY explored the challenges of an inherently connected society “going live” in the digital age. Including new initiatives such as the Open Web Award, the festival explored those real and active zones of radical artistic, cultural and political activity that we, as a global community of individuals and independent initiatives, need to protect in order to guarantee the unhindered freedom to create new forms of communication, social interaction and cultural development.
