Tyneside Cinema - The Learning Revolution
Haus Projects programmed and managed a series of events and creative activities with the Tyneside Cinema, called The Learning Revolution. From January to March 2010, over 60 unusual events and activities took place in and around the building, to enable people to experience the cinema and its facilities, and to expand their own personal learning.
The whole programme had a digital focus; from developing computer game ideas to helping older people communicate on the web. Tyneside Cinema invited all participants to engage with the cinema online on dedicated web space for the programme, to talk about the events, share experiences and have a hand in shaping this revolutionary way of learning through doing. Participants in The Learning Revolution were able to practice a foreign language, write a cookbook, and join in on some social film clubs. There were guest speakers, special screenings, and interactive workshops to develop skills.
Haus Projects' personal highlight was the 24 Hour Comic Challenge, in collaboration with new independent press organisation P.R.E.S.S. The cinema opened for 24 hours as a group of artists, illustrators and participants worked together to create a 24-page comic in a day, with Drink and Draw breakout sessions and drop-in for the general public.
The Learning Revolution is the response to a White Paper on informal learning, and was funded by the Transformation Fund by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
